Beyonce and Fosse: A Lesson on Compare and Contrast

Shortly after starting my previous post, I was alerted to the fact that the moves for the Single Ladies video were based on those of a group named Fosse. I'd never heard of the group before, and I still need to do a little research, but the beginning steps are identical to the Single Ladies video.





While the two videos are quite similar, they are also very different. For example, Beyonce's moves are more "dance" while Fosse's moves are more "acrobatics." The absence of above-the-head leg swings from the Single Ladies video are wonderful. The video would have looked almost kooky with these. They seem much better fitted to the Fosse video.

Personally, I'm very happy that Beyonce and her choreographers could take something as vile as Fosse's Mexican Breakfast and turn it in to something wonderful.
